I spent my morning with this lovely bunch of COA kids to discuss WHO they are and the gift that they are in the world! We also talked about what gets in the way of us being ourselves. Some shared challenges with bullying and teasing. Others opened up about fear and rejection. We shed light on the fact that we are often not being ourselves because the world can make it unsafe to be who we really are. I watched boys and girls from 6th grade to 10th grade open up to each other and discover exactly how alike we all are. We began to see the struggles and desires that we all share. We created a safe space in which barriers got torn down and friends were made. They got that COA is their opportunity to learn how to discover, own, love, share, and celebrate themselves! As a result, these amazing children stepped into their leadership and created a community that invites authenticity and acceptance. Just, wow. Teri Steel, the work you do is incredible, irreplaceable, and vital in this day and age. THANK YOU for having me to dig in with those beautiful hearts you serve. It was an honor.
